Funny Cartoon Set in a Bookstore

Every now and then, someone walks into a bookshop and asks the ultimate loaded question: "Have you got something for the man who thinks he knows everything?"

It’s the kind of query that makes any bookseller instantly contemplate early retirement or a sharp exit through the back door. How on earth do you stock shelves for someone whose ego requires its own postcode?

Naturally, I had to turn that particular retail headache into a cartoon, because some eccentric corners of customer service are far too good to waste.

Whether you're looking for a gift for that impossibly smug relative or just fancy a bit of bookish humor on your wall, I've put this design together on a poster over at Zazzle. Have a gander below if you fancy a chuckle.

The Fascinating History of the Bed of Nails – From Indian Fakirs to Cartoon Inspiration

Few images are quite as universally recognised as someone calmly horizontal on a bed of nails. It’s an odd spectacle that has kept audiences thoroughly bemused for generations.

Naturally, it begs the question: where did this remarkable party trick originate, and how on earth does someone manage to lie across hundreds of sharp iron spikes without turning themselves into a pincushion?

Traditionally associated with Indian fakirs, spiritual endurance, and Victorian stage magic, the bed of nails has earned its permanent place in popular culture. It even found its way onto my own drawing board...

What exactly is a bed of nails?

At its core, it’s simply a wooden board or platform crammed with a dense grid of upward-pointing spikes. Though it looks like a medieval torture device, the physics are surprisingly forgiving.

When a person's body weight is distributed across hundreds or thousands of individual points, the pressure on any single point drops dramatically. Stand on one nail and you're in for a rough afternoon; spread yourself across five hundred, and it's barely an inconvenience.

The fakir tradition

The image is deeply intertwined with Indian ascetics and fakirs who used intense physical disciplines to demonstrate mastery over the body and mind.

To Victorian and twentieth-century Western audiences, these demonstrations looked utterly miraculous, cementing the trope of the serene mystic floating—or rather, lying—above earthly pain.

The science of not getting impaled

As any physics teacher will happily remind you, pressure equals force divided by area. Spreading your torso across a multitude of tips means each individual nail bears only a fraction of your weight.

Of course, it still requires proper technique and reliable hardware. Sudden movements or poorly spaced nails will quickly remind a performer that physics is an unforgiving discipline.

A modern retail twist

As a cartoonist, I couldn't resist poking a bit of fun at the solemn mysticism surrounding the practice. Ancient asceticism meets modern consumer capitalism seemed like fertile ground.

In my cartoon, set in a bustling bazaar, an Indian fakir is inspecting a brand-new bed of nails while the vendor delivers the ultimate modern sales pitch: "Plus you get additional points on your loyalty card."

Because let's face it—even a millennium-old test of spiritual endurance isn't safe from corporate rewards schemes.
